Pittsburg Pirates @ San Francisco Giants (game 2)

Tuesday was a frustrating day, as I had to sort out my accommodation for Boston, as it's less than a week before I arrive there now.  I passed on the hotels that wanted $2000 per night.  Eventually, I found a decent enough hotel at the end of one of the T metro lines, which was still expensive ($1200, but that was the total, including taxes, for all 4 nights)  I'm going to have to leave early on the Friday morning to get to the airport in time, but at least I do have somewhere to stay now.

I do not have game tickets yet for St Louis or for Boston, as the website for buying them appears to be down right now.  However, I did manage to buy the ticket for the one game I'm seeing in New York.

I managed to miss the top of the 1st of tonight's game, which featured the first start of the year for Johnny Cueto, returning after a long injury lay-off.  However, I did arrive during the bottom of the 1st inning, just before the Giants scored the first runs of the game to get off to a 3-0 lead.

The lead was stretched to 5 and Cueto duly pitched 5 innings, giving up no runs, just the 1 hit, and was taken out of the game, as it's his first start and San Francisco will need him next year.  Relievers fought their way through until 2 outs in the 8th inning, when Pittsburg managed a rally and scored 4 runs, capped by Josh Bell's 2-run home run.  Fortunately, the tying run never scored and the Giants hung on in the top of the 9th to get the win for Cueto.

An amazing statistic was published today, and it only lasted until the Pirates final out in today's game.  It's shown on the scoreboard in the bottom left of the photo.

The Giants' manager, Bruce Bochy, is retiring at the end of the season.  He started managing in the majors in 1995.  That means his managerial career will run 1995-2019.

Coming into today's game, as a manager, his teams' W/L record was ... 1995-2019 (i.e. 1995 wins; 2019 losses)

He should get win number 2000 during the series against Miami this weekend, but if not, there's a chance I might see it in Boston next week - assuming the Giants can actually win!
